Mercer and Scatter
Understanding Mercer and Scatter Fabrics
Herman Miller's Mercer and Scatter fabrics are unique in their design and characteristics, though neither is ideal for head or neck comfort, and both are unavailable in our offerings.
Here's a detailed look at each material to help you identify if your chair has one of these fabrics:
Mercer Fabric
- Appearance: Mercer features a base color complemented by flecks or specks of contrasting colors. Its visible knitting and speckled texture give it depth and an organic look.
- Texture and Usage: With a slightly coarse weave resembling a classic basketweave, it balances traditional and modern aesthetics. Mercer has been discontinued by Herman Miller.
Scatter Fabric
- Appearance: Scatter’s pattern consists of scattered, irregular dashes that add depth and dimension. Its tightly knit weave and contrasting dash pattern offer a modern yet subtle design.
- Texture and Purpose: Scatter is a contractor-grade fabric, prioritized for durability and high wear. However, it is less soft and harder to the touch, making it ideal for heavy use but less desirable for comfort-focused applications.
Why We Don’t Offer These Fabrics
Neither Mercer nor Scatter meets the standards we prioritize for comfort and touch. While durable and visually appealing, their textures are not ideal for head or neck use, which requires softness and premium comfort.
